At Indigo Architects we encourage innovation more than anything. 'Serendipity Mobile'
is one of our initiatives to explore the amazing possibilities in the world of mobile
applications. The concept is so engaging that it has been admired by senior guys
at Microsoft including 'Amithabh Shrivastava'.
The Idea
Imagine you are stuck alone at an Airport and the flight is delayed by couple of
hours. Wouldn't it be great that you could find an old high-school friend who is
also in the same airport and cherish old memories!
In real life we come across similar situation many times. And do we do? Call up
a friend / send texts, play game on mobile, read a book, wander the waiting room
pointlessly ? But wouldn't it be more cool to hang out with someone that doing these
things?
Sounds great? Then why don't we have such apps build already; this is because of
the challenges involved:
- How would you know who are my friends, i.e. whether both of them know each other
and are interested in talking?
- How do we find where exact is your friend located at this moment?
The Solution
Now Imagine yourself again in the same situation, this time 'Serendipity mobile'
application installed on your mobile. Here is what you would do:
- Start the Serendipity Mobile app
and login
- You had already configured your favorite
social networking services in Serendipity and your entire
friend-circle who uses Serendipity is available for you!
- Just go through the list or browse on
the map to see who's nearby…
- Select that friend and you can fire up the conversation through
call, sms or email (and you don't have to know his phone no./email id beforehand,
Serendipity will do if for you)
Simple, straightforward and useful. Isn't it?
But as any great piece of software, lot of effort goes behind to make it elegant.
Here are some of the insights:
-
Support to multiple Social Networks:
Not everyone of your friends will be on same network. So we support users to configure
multiple social networks such as Windows Live, Google and yahoo, so that a user
can have all his friends available on Serendipity. We use protocols like O-Auth
and other custom protocols as used by the specific providers.
-
It just works whether you have GPS or not:
Although most of the high-end phones today have built-in GPS receivers for finding
current location of a user, we wanted to cover others as well. For this we have
used some breakthrough innovations. Thus you will find Serendipity working in the
same way on your phone even when you don't have GPS device.
Besides these there are other features that we implemented. For example in Serendipity
we never ask you to provide us your credentials for any social networking service.
All authentications are perform by actual service providers rather than us. We can
also suggest you some friends in the vicinity based on common interests.
The application is built for Windows Mobile Platform (v 6.0) and platforms
supported by Yahoo BluePrint framework. It utilizes the concepts of Service
oriented Architecture (SOA) hence can also be extended for other mobile platforms.
